Precision manufacturing often involves several operations, from turning and milling to cutting and polishing. The roundness and surface condition of the starting bar can influence how easily that material moves through subsequent processing.
Established in 1994, Forte Precision Metals, Inc. supplies precision ground and cold finish steel round bars. We also provide in house centerless grinding to produce materials with accurate roundness and polished surfaces. Here’s how our grinding capabilities support round bar preparation and related manufacturing operations.
Why Centerless Grinding Is the Starting Point for Precision Work
Roundness and surface condition are the two results of our grinding that carry into every operation after it. These characteristics can provide a more consistent starting point for subsequent machining and finishing operations.
Why We Keep Grinding In House
We’re an ISO 9001:2015 certified round bar supplier, and keeping centerless grinding in house means that step stays with us instead of going to an outside vendor.
Roundness and Polish, and What They Mean for Your Next Operation
A bar with accurate roundness gives the next operation a consistent starting surface to locate and hold against. That matters if the bar is headed for turning or milling.
Our metal turning holds ±0.001 in. on axis symmetric rotational components. Our milling holds ±0.001 in. on pockets, holes, slots, and 3D surface contours. Those are separate services with their own tolerances. A consistently round starting bar can provide a more reliable reference surface for subsequent precision machining operations.
Polish matters too. For additional surface finishing, our polishing service can finish to a specific roughness average or a #8 mirror finish, and also covers electroplating and custom stainless steel polishing.
Sizing Your Job to Our Grinding Capacity
We centerless grind up to 7″ in diameter and up to 24 feet in length. Those two numbers are the first thing to check when you plan a ground bar order.
If you’d rather not cut full length bars yourself, our CNC saw cutting handles cut to length work for individual bars and bundles. If your project requires a diameter above 7″, contact us to discuss your material and processing requirements.
How Grinding Works With Our Other Bar Services
Grinding is one step among several. Bar straightening runs on rotary straightening machines for ferrous and non ferrous bars, with pipe straightening included. Bar chamfering creates close chamfered ends and removes burrs and sharp edges, which makes ground bars easier to handle and load. For parts that need more than preparation, custom machining is CNC and CAD/CAM equipped and holds ±0.005″.
Then there’s protecting the finish you paid for. We package in cardboard tubing, wooden boxes, wood crates, paper wrapping, UPS packages, and custom wood boxes. We ship nationally and worldwide.
Parts That Start as Round Bar
We supply materials for aerospace, automotive, construction, medical, military, oil and gas, and food processing applications. Different steel grades offer properties suited to specific industrial components.
4142 alloy steel is a medium carbon, heat treatable grade used in applications such as die holders, gears, collets, and axles. Grade 420 stainless steel is a martensitic grade with higher carbon content than 410 and greater hardness. Its applications include cutlery and surgical instruments. Grade 52100 is a high carbon chromium alloy steel used for aircraft bearings and highly stressed parts.
These applications illustrate how material properties influence grade selection, but the right choice depends on your component requirements and operating conditions.
Materials Available as Precision Ground Bar
We supply precision ground bar in stainless steel, aluminum, bronze, copper, and tool steel, as well as titanium ground bar stock. For material grades or ground bar requirements not covered here, contact us with your specifications to discuss available options.
What to Tell Us When You Request Ground Bar
When you request ground bar, include the material and grade, finished diameter and length, and any tolerance or surface finish callouts from your print. Let us know whether the bar needs cutting, straightening, chamfering, machining, or polishing, and how it should be packaged and shipped. That gives us the full scope of your project from the start.
Bring Us Your Next Ground Bar Job
If you’re planning parts that start as precision ground bar, call our team at +1 (847) 451-8888, Monday through Saturday, 7 AM to 5 PM. You can also send your specs through our request a quote page. Share your material grade, diameter, length, and processing requirements so we can discuss our centerless grinding capabilities for your project.
