When a customer pushes aluminum to its structural ceiling, 7075 is the answer. It competes directly with lighter steel grades on a strength-to-weight basis.

2024 is the fatigue-resistant choice. Aerospace and precision machining applications involving cyclic loading lean toward this grade because the performance holds up under repeated stress in ways that softer aluminum grades do not.

6061, 6262, and 2011: The Practical Shop Grades

6061 is where most structural aluminum conversations begin. It combines corrosion resistance with clean machinability, making it reliable for aerospace, automotive, and general precision machining work. It machines consistently and holds dimensions well, which matters when tolerances are tight.

6262 and 2011 serve high-volume screw machine work and automotive components, where material removal speed is the priority. Neither is a structural first choice, but for lighter components requiring tight dimensional control, both grades perform exactly as needed.

Aluminum accounts for roughly 75 percent of aircraft structure, and that number reflects a real engineering advantage. When a component moves, flies, or gets repositioned repeatedly, the weight savings reduce energy use, fastener fatigue, and service life costs. For abrasion, high compressive loads, or impact resistance, steel remains the right answer. Our alloy steel grades like 4340, known for high fatigue strength, and tool steel grades running 0.5 to 1.5 percent carbon with hardness and abrasion resistance built in, handle environments that aluminum physically cannot. How We Process Aluminum Round Bar

Our centerless grinding operation handles aluminum bars up to 7 inches in diameter and 24 feet in length. Tolerances hold as tight as plus or minus .0001 inch with a microfinish down to 8RA. Metal turning and milling both run to plus or minus .001 inch on rotational components and surface contours.

Custom machining handles parts up to 12 inches long and 10 inches in diameter at plus or minus .005 inch, CNC and CAD/CAM equipped. Everything runs under one ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system at our Franklin Park facility, so your bar never moves between vendors and picks up handling variation.
